Tipping Fig Shoots for Better Production, 6.18.2021

When fig shoots have 4 to 6 leaves, tipping the shoot can stimulate earlier fig producton. It's simple, just be t the tip until it snaps. Removing the growth point stops apical dominance, and baby figs soon appear after the tip is snappeed off. Before:

Today I tipped Brunswick, Adriatic, and Champagne fig trees. I did Celeste a few days ago. Some others are not far enough along yet.

  1. When do you start tipping? like is there a certain leaf count? Which adriatic variety do you grow? i hear adriatic fig types are late for our pnw area.

  2. Kim, I usually tip at about five or six healthy looking leaves. You are right, Adriatic isn't my top choice. I have about 12 varieties, always hoping for a good year as they mature. Also, different years are different. For me, most reliable and productive are Lattarula, King, Hardy Chicago. Carini does well. I have a White Sicilian that shows promise, also last year my young Celeste did well. I like Petite Negri the best, but it doesnt bear well and is often too late.

  3. im curious how your white silician does please keep us posted! celeste i heard is good just tends to drop when young. carini does it have breba crop? umm, im testing petite negra it doesnt seem to have any fruit this year. but it seem quite similar to Violette de bordeaux which i grow. If you want to test some more figs please let me know in January i like to send you some. since your trees are in the ground the fruit much sooner than my potted figs.

    1. Hi Kim, so far the White Sicilian is looking good this year. I will post if there are fruit. I think there will be in a few more weeks.
This year the Celeste brebas fell off during that terrible hot spell. Lattarula and King are ALMOST bearing now, Jul 25. There are a couple of ripe ones as of yesterday.

    2. My figs are rather late compared to other years. I think the heat wave affected it since it took time to recover. i did lose 20% of my crop fruit dropping due to the heat. My earliest is florea but the birds ate them. I have a white marseilles but i didnt see any fruit left after the drop.

  4. Kim, I think my figs were affected too. As for birds, bright holographic flash tape can be very helpful. It really saved my cherries, blueberries, and raspberries, which birds normally eat completely. My biggest problem for figs is yellow jackets. They can destroy every fig from the inside. Yesterday I put out yellow jacket traps. The insects started landing on me. I didn't like that 😀
