Toka Plums. 8.23.15

Toka Plums.  8.23.15

Fully ripe, my Toka plums tend to fall off the tree with the slightest movement. I missed some, on the ground. These are incredibly sweet and juice, like honey on apricots. Wow.

  4. Thank Daniel.
Last year my Toka plum stay green with red bush until the end. I found out that it was wrong label, it was a Cambridge green gage plum. It was very good plum so I still have it. Last month I bought 2 more from Lowe 1 Toka and 1 Superior with a lot of flowers now. Hopefully will have some fruit this year.

  5. Vincent, thank you for commenting. I think you will like Toka, great flavor. Toka is a hybrid more than 100 years old, created by the great plant explorer and breeder, Niels Hansen. Toka is a hybrid of a Chinese species, P. simonii, from Hebei, and American species P. americana. It is a good pollenizer for other hybrid plums and is self pollinating too. Green gages are usually self pollinating, and do not cross pollinate with Asian or American plums. I think Superior is also an Asian x American hybrid but not sure of that. Next year you could probably graft on another European variety to the Gage, for better pollination and fruit. Gages are usually very sweet and delicious. I have new posts with description of bloom times for my trees. Happy growing!
