Seed Starting. Peppers and Onions. LED Lights. 1.25.19

Germinating Onion and Pepper Seedlings.  1.25.19
 Here are the seedlings so far.  I've been starting them in seedling 6-packs.  I put the 6 packs into a cheap bread-loaf sized plastic bag and sit them on a seedling warmer mat until they germinate.  Then they come out of the bag and are just under the lights.

Despite the weird color when the lights are turned on, the plants seem to be growing normally.  Turn off the lights, and the leaves are a normal green.

 I may set up one of the old CFL fixtures, because I don't want to spend too much on LEDs and I have more seedlings to start.

The onion varieties are Red Westerfield, Stuttgarter, and some old seeds from Blush Pink or something like that.  I also bought some WallaWalla seeds that I started a few days ago.

 I planted some Tabasco and Thai pepper seeds earlier, which have partially germinated.  The seed warmer mat dries them out a little too fast for me, so I took that out.  If no additional Tabasco and Thai seedlings emerge, I think I have enough.

Today I planted additional pepper seeds - "Craig Jalapeno", a Jalapeno from the store, Banana, Ring Of Fire cayenne-type, and regular Cayenne, and a Korean Pepper. Most are from Baker Creek Seeds.

Drying Ripe Cayenne and Thai Peppers. 11.24.17

The darker peppers are cayenne.  They ripen earlier, than Thai peppers.  It's chilly and rainy outside now, and there has been a light frost.  I don't think these hybrid Thai peppers will ripen further outside, so we strung them up.

Simple.  Use needle and thread.  Run the needle through the green stems.  These are hanging from a light fixture.  They might make a nice Xmas wreath, done a little differently.

Thai Pepper Plants from Grocery Store Peppers. 2.25.17

These are some peppers that I bought at the Asian grocery store.  Just for fun, I broke a couple to obtain seeds, and sprouted them on moist paper towel in a ziplock bag.  Now I'm transferring them to seed starting soil to see what happens.

Today's Kitchen Garden Yield. 9.21.14

Kitchen Garden Yield.  9.21.14
Fingerling potatoes, Asian Pears, more Tomatoes, various winter squash, a yellow summer squash, okra, various peppers, containerized Thai and Tabasco peppers, and probably some things I forgot.

This is one of our best garden yields ever, for this time of year.  Very happy with the result.

Kitchen garden harvest

 Kitchen garden is winding down.

I appreciate each and every pepper, tomato, and fig.

I picked the watermelon.  It turned out to be underripe.   Very bland, not very sweet.  Chickens got most of it.

Birds got a lot of the figs this year.  I didn't net the trees.  Next year, I should.  I have the net.  I did not have the energy.

Today I picked and ate, 2 more figs from the Sal's Fig tree.  Those continue to be very good.  It's nice to have fresh figs at the Battleground place.

Kitchen Garden

Today...

I picked a bowl of ripe figs.  Most were Petite Negri and Hardy Chicago.  Two Lattarula.

I picked a big yellow bell pepper.

And a few Thai peppers.

 The first cantaloupe.  I've been watching for ripeness.  Today when I picked it up gently, the stem detached itself from the vine.  So it's ripe.

The flavor was good.  Tasted just like a cantaloupe.

This is a convenient size.  Like a grapefruit.  It ripened soon enough for us to get a taste.  There are a few more on the fine.  None went to waste.  The chickens like the seeds.

Butternut Squash
 One of the watermelons developed a big hole in the size.  Then spoiled.  So the chickens got it.  They liked it

Another watermelon is looking almost ripe.  Maybe tomorrow.

The butternut squash is my first attempt at Winter squash.  Nice size for the two of us.

These were I-phone pics.  I misplaced my camera.  The colors are a little off. My hand is not that pink.  But the melon looks right.
