Chestnuts are dropping from the tree. 9.28.2021

The first chestnuts are dropping from the trees. The trees are about four years old. This year there are a few dozen chestnuts on the trees.

  1. Just out of curiosity where did you get the chestnuts. I have a small farm in Philomath, and would like to add chestnuts.

    Thanks

  2. Chris, mine were from Burnt Ridge nursery, via internet order. They are a Western Washington State nursery. I have some advice: (1) buy only grafted trees. Seed grown take too long to bear, years longer. (2) You need at least two varieties. They are not self pollinating. (3) Some varieties do not produce pollen. Don't use those unless you have two other varieties that do. Chestnut trees grow quite large, like maples or oak trees. They do need protection from deer when small, at least my Battle Ground deer colony. You can't buy chestnut trees from East of the Rockies - too high risk for spreading chestnut blight and destroying the chestnut farms that exist here.
