Apricots from seeds. 10.6.15

Apricot Seeds.   Stratigied 2 months, then warm 10 days.  10.6.15-
Apricot seed sprouting, before covering with seed starting medium.  10.6.15
Here are some apricots seeds that I stratified 2 months in the fridge.

The peacotum seeds rotted.

I have others, mainly peaches.

I took these apricot seeds out of the fridge, left them on moist paper towel to sprout.  Room temp.  At 10 days, most are splitting and several have a root.

I planted the 3 with the longest roots in dampened peat-moss-based seed starting medium, one inch deep.  They are back in the seed starting rack again.  I left the others to continue sprouting on moist paper towel, in the same zipper plastic bag.

These are a locally grown apricot.  I looks like there will be several trees to play with.  I can use one for scion, grow a couple in containers, and grow a couple in the ground.

  1. My great-grandkids and I planted several prune seeds this summer and hope they will grow. We just put them in holes at the end of the terraces in the garden. Your photos offer ideas for how to start them. We will do some experimenting next spring and summer.

  2. Fun! I stratified and then planted the seeds from a quince last winter and they germinated and grew rapidly but then got a finicky once they had developed a few leaves, and after a few weeks I only had two left. They are still alive now and have found a spot in the garden but grew so slowly over the summer that I have my doubts that they will survive the winter.

  3. I saved my apricot seeds, but haven't done anything with them yet. After reading your method, Daniel, I'll try it! Thanks.

    1. A few more sprouted. Since planting in seed starting medium, none have raised their heads above it. That may take a week, I don't know. , I'm impatient.

I put the peach seeds back in the refrigerator, having read they need 90 days stratification. Except one package, which had one sprouting seed. I don't know what to make of that. It's in seed starting medium now too.

  4. I've no clue on how to germinate any peach seeds but I have a lot of them popping out all the time. I like to just toss and forget. 90 days seems a very longtime for me. They do make wonder trees that bares good fruits. Grow from seeds' better for me since I yet have a good graft on peaches.

    1. Your method is as good as any, including mine. One batch has turned to slime in their plastic bag.

For me this is an attempt to maybe get production a year sooner, by growing them through the winter indoors. I dont know if it will work.
